Epistemology & hinduism


According to hindu mythology, the Lord Ganesha is shown sitting on ‘a mouse’, extending the symbolism, Lord Ganesha is associated with ‘knowledge’ & mouse with ‘reasoning’, the base over which the knowledge exists. In a simpler words , it is basically the extension of epistemology & its deep underlying principles, which defines the knowledge as an intersection between beliefs & truth.

The shloka is basically a manifestation of Shree Ganesha, he is the hindu deity whose blessings are seeked by all & sundry before every task. It translates as

O mighty God with a big belly and with the radiance of thousand suns

Always bless me to complete my every task by removing obstacles.

EPISTEMOLOGY or theory of knowledge is a branch of philosophy concerned with the nature and scope of knowledge. They say it is intersection of truths & beliefs.It cant be a exclusive one, either a pure belief or just the truth.The exact truth has hounded man since ad infinitum.Bateson was a pioneer in field of epistemology. Bateson was a pioneer in field of epistemology & he coined few epigrams, which have been a relevant expansion of his philosphy. 


·         The map is not the territory, and the name is not the thing named.

·         There are no monotone “values” in biology.

·         “Logic is a poor model of cause and effect.”

·         Language commonly stresses only one side of any interaction.

·         Double description is better than one.

·         Bateson defines information as “a difference that makes a difference”

·         The source of the new is the random.


·         What is true is that the idea of power corrupts. Power corrupts most rapidly those who believe in it, and it is they who will want it most. Obviously, our democratic system tends to give power to those who hunger for it and gives every opportunity to those who don’t want power to avoid getting it. Not a very satisfactory arrangement if power corrupts those who believe in it and want it.
